‘Is dreadlocks the problem?’ Daddy Showkey slams Niger governor over arrest order
Veteran Nigerian musician, John Asiemo, aka Daddy Showkey, has criticised Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, over his controversial directive to arrest individuals wearing dreadlocks in the state capital, Minna.
In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Daddy Showkey, known for his signature dreadlocks, slammed the governor’s directive and questioned if the hairstyles is associated with insecurity.
“Na dreadlock dey cause insecurity for the country or na dada dey worry you? What of people with mumu beard?” Showkey questioned.
He also revealed he had been planning a visit to Minna, but would now reconsider due to the directive saying, “Mohamed Umar, dada be your problem? I dey to come Minna but now you have ask your security agents to cut off dreadlocks so hold your state, but make you cut your beer beer.”
PUNCH Online reports that Bago had made the directive during a stakeholders’ security meeting held at the Government House on Tuesday, where he instructed security agencies to cut the hair of those wearing dreadlocks and impose fines on them.
The governor, however, reversed his controversial directive ordering the arrest of individuals with dreadlocks, following widespread backlash from the public and civil rights advocates.
