Zelenskyy demands global action after Russian missiles kill dozens on Palm Sunday
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Sunday appealed to the United States, European allies, and the broader international community following a deadly Russian missile attack on the northeastern city of Sumy during Palm Sunday celebrations.
The attack, confirmed by Zelenskyy, killed at least 31 people in Sumy, after a Russian ballistic missile struck a central area of the city where families had gathered to observe one of the most sacred days on the Christian calendar.
Two ballistic missiles hit the city centre on Sunday morning, according to acting mayor Artem Kobzar.
The strike caused significant destruction, hitting residential buildings, educational institutions, and vehicles in a public square. Emergency services were on the scene through the night, working to rescue victims and search for survivors.
In a statement on his official X account, Zelenskyy condemned the assault as a deliberate act of terror.
He described the missiles as targeting “ordinary life” on a day traditionally devoted to worship and peace.
Zelenskyy called for a firm international response, warning that continued inaction would only embolden further violence.
He stated that Russia’s ongoing use of ballistic missiles and aerial bombs underscores the limits of diplomatic efforts in curbing the conflict.
The president said, “According to preliminary information, dozens of civilians were killed and wounded. Only filthy scum can act like this – taking the lives of ordinary people. My condolences to the families and loved ones. A rescue operation is underway. All necessary services are working at the scene.
“The world must respond firmly. The United States, Europe, and everyone in the world who wants this war and these killings to end. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war out. Without pressure on Russia, peace is impossible.
“Talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and aerial bombs. What’s needed is an attitude toward Russia that a terrorist deserves. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine and helps us defend life.”
The attack in Sumy marked another escalation in the war, now entering its third year, with civilians frequently caught in the crossfire.
“In Sumy, efforts are ongoing to eliminate the consequences of the Russian ballistic missile strike. All necessary services are involved in the rescue operation.
“68 people injured in the attack are currently in medical facilities, 8 of whom are in serious condition. Doctors are doing everything possible to save lives and preserve the health of the wounded.
“In addition to the university, the strike damaged five apartment buildings, cafes, shops, and the district court. In total, the Russian attack damaged 20 buildings.
