Nigerian Government To Reopen Enugu Airport Monday After Runway Repairs
The repairs, which commenced on April 22, were triggered by a sudden rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, prompting the airport’s temporary closure.
The Nigerian government has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State will resume flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025.
This follows seven days of closure for the urgent repair of its runway.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed the reopening.
The repairs, which commenced on April 22, were triggered by a sudden rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, prompting the airport’s temporary closure.
It was noted that the Nigerian government had approved a N10billion budget in 2019 for the extension and rehabilitation of the airport’s runway.
The contract was awarded to PW Construction Company under the tenure of the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.
In earlier years, a significant remodel of the airport, including its runway, was carried out by Princess Stella Oduah, the former Minister of Aviation, as part of a $500 million loan from China, with the airport reopening in 2014.
FAAN expressed gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of all airport users and stakeholders during the closure.
The statement concluded, “FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time.
“The Authority sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.”
