Drug dealers shoot NDLEA officers in Abuja raid
Suspected drug dealers on Thursday night shot operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency during a raid in the Jahi area of Abuja, leaving three officers hospitalised with gunshot injuries.
The NDLEA team had stormed an uncompleted building in the NNPC area of Jahi based on credible intelligence and surveillance, targeting a notorious drug hub.
The operation led to the seizure of 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol (225mg), 4.9 kilograms of skunk—a potent variant of cannabis—and five Android phones.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the officers were ambushed by armed men suspected to be linked to the drug cartel as they were exiting the scene.
A statement released on Friday by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the attackers opened fire on the operatives, hitting one officer in the rib, another in the back, and a third in the leg.
The injured personnel were initially taken to the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for specialised treatment.
Babafemi said the agency’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd), who was in Kano on official assignment, personally spoke with the wounded officers and assured them of the agency’s full support.
“He also reached out to the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital and commended the medical team handling the officers’ treatment. Marwa assured that the agency will collaborate with other security outfits to track down and bring the attackers to justice,” Babafemi said.
