US Threatens To Pull Out Of Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks
He noted that the United States may be forced to walk away within days unless signs of progress are recorded.
The United States government has threatened to abandon its role in brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia.
According to Reuters, the threat was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday.
“We’re not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end. So we need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks,” Rubio said in Paris after meeting with European and Ukrainian leaders.
He noted that the United States may be forced to walk away within days unless signs of progress are recorded.
According to him, the president feels very strongly about the matter.
“He has dedicated a lot of time and energy to this … this is important, but there are a lot of other really important things going on that deserve just as much, if not more, attention,” Rubio was quoted by Reuters as saying.
Trump stated on Thursday that he expected to sign a deal with Kyiv next week.
Once signed, the deal would give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
Earlier in March, SaharaReporters reported that U.S. President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, telling him he could face “big, big problems” if he withdrew from the rare earth mineral deal with the United States.
“He’s trying to back out of the rare earth deal,” Trump said, referring to the agreement that grants the U.S. access to Ukraine’s valuable mineral resources. “If he does that, he’s got some problems. Big, big problems. We made a deal on rare earth. And now he’s saying, ‘Well, you know, I want to renegotiate the deal,’” Trump was quoted as saying.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after he criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin for his comments about Zelenskyy.
Trump also dismissed Zelenskyy’s ambitions to join NATO.
“He wants to be a member of NATO. He was never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that,” Trump said, making it clear that Zelenskyy’s NATO aspirations were unrealistic.
