Sowore Knocks Governor Sanwo-Olu For Fanfare Over Launch Of Rail Line Lagos Workers’ N85,000 Monthly Minimum Wage Can’t Afford
Sowore analysed that going by the N85,000 minimum wage approved by the state government and the train’s fare of N1500 per trip, residents and workers in the state will spend N60,000 per month out of the newly approved N85,000 minimum wage.
Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has berated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for launching commercial operations on the state’s red line rail which average residents, including civil servants will not be able to afford.
Sowore analysed that going by the N85,000 minimum wage approved by the state government and the train’s fare of N1500 per trip, residents and workers in the state will spend N60,000 per month out of the newly approved N85,000 minimum wage.
A further breakdown shows that at N1,500 per trip, passengers will spend N15,000 per week, and N60,000 per month from the approved N85,000 minimum wage.
In a post on his X account, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), said, “Yesterday the Lagos state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched a Redline train with fanfare, it costs N1,500 per trip, N15,000 per week, N60,000 monthly.
“Also, he launched Lagos’s minimum wage at N85,000 per month. If workers take the redline to work, then?”
Governor Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday announced the launch of commercial operations on the red line rail, a project President Bola Tinubu inaugurated February 29.
The governor in a statement said the train service is projected to move about 500,000 Lagosians daily on the corridor, adding that the commercial operations will run from Agbado to Oyingbo, and that the government will continue to ramp up the schedule.
The governor also on Wednesday, during an interview on Channels TV tagged “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” announced that his government plans to pay workers a minimum wage of N85,000.
Sanwo-Olu said he would be glad to come on air in January 2025 to announce that his government would be even be more, that is N100,000 as minimum wage.
