LG Elections: Candidates To Pay N10million, N5million For Chairmanship, Councillorship Seats
The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced that candidates contesting for chairmanship positions in the upcoming local government elections must pay N10 million, while those seeking councillorship seats are required to pay N5million.
This was revealed by KANSIEC Chairman, Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, during the presentation of election guidelines and the timetable to representatives of political parties at the commission’s headquarters on Thursday.
Malumfashi explained that the guidelines detail the qualifications and disqualifications for candidates.
He stressed that candidates must be card-carrying members of political parties, with chairmanship aspirants being at least 30 years old and councillorship aspirants at least 25 years old.
Additionally, candidates must not be bankrupt, ex-convicts, or involved in drug addiction or secret societies.
“Chairmanship aspirants must not be bankrupt or ex-convicts. They must be physically and mentally healthy and obtain at least a secondary school certificate.
“All the aspirants and candidates must not be drug addicts or members of secret societies,” he said.
Malumfashi also announced that campaigns would begin on 6th September and conclude on 31st October, urging political parties to ensure peaceful rallies.
He said, “During campaigns, we warn against disparaging and abusive comments. Personal attacks during campaigns are discouraged in these guidelines.
“You must be tolerant of one another. You should be civil and democratic in your campaigns. The campaigns should be issue-based, not personal attacks.
“We have pressing issues bedevilling this country, such as poverty, infrastructure, women and youth empowerment, and the inclusion of disadvantaged groups, among others. You should capitalise on these during the campaigns.
“We will not condone violence, as it contradicts election laws. Personal oral and physical attacks are discouraged in the election and are punishable by law.”
