According to sources close to the matter, both governors will travel to Washington for in-person interviews with Harris. The Washington Post was the first to break the news of these high-stakes meetings, which mark a significant step in Harris’ search for a running mate.
Harris is conducting formal interviews with a range of vice-presidential candidates, including some who have not been publicly confirmed, according to a source familiar with the process.
These interviews are taking place both in person and virtually. Notably, Harris herself had a virtual meeting with President Biden during his VP selection process in 2020, while other candidates had in-person interviews.
Two of the confirmed candidates, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, boast high approval ratings and impressive track records.
Shapiro, with a 60% approval rating, has won statewide office three times and overseen a landmark investigation into Catholic church abuse as Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official.
Walz, serving his second term, has enacted numerous progressive priorities, including protecting abortion access, legalizing recreational marijuana, and expanding paid family leave.
Additionally, Harris is also interviewing other candidates, including Govs. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, according to sources familiar with the selection process.
Harris is set to announce her vice presidential running mate by Tuesday, ahead of a week of joint campaigning in crucial battleground states.
Although Harris has already secured the majority of pledged and automatic delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination through the electronic roll call, voting will remain open until Monday.
Following the announcement, Harris and her chosen running mate will hit the campaign trail together, focusing on key states that will be pivotal in the upcoming election.
